Rants of the Season

by ckonstan on Dec.24, 2010, under Uncategorized

I know it’s Christmas and all and it’s a time of giving and rejoicing, but in this Christmas season a few things have me a little peeved right now. So this is going to be my rant article of the week. Because frankly some stupid things have happened in the world of sports this week that have made me a bit mad.

First off five Ohio State players, highlighted by quarterback Terrelle Pryor, were suspended the first five games for selling jerseys and awards for money. As well as trading autographs for free tattoos. When I read this I thought you got to be kidding me. These guys aren’t idiots they know that what they were doing is against NCAA rules, no matter how dumb these NCAA rules are they are still rules and it is rare that people get away with them. The second thing that blew my mind about this situation is Terrelle Pryor. Here you got a guy that had dreams of being an NFL quarterback, this is why he came to Ohio State in the first place. He wanted to learn a pro style offense so he opted to go to OSU over schools like Oregon that run the spread (or whatever Oregon’s crazy offense is). In his first three seasons he’s shown signs that he has what it takes to be a next level quarterback, but he has been inconsistent and in my opinion at times god awful. He has potential, but potential can only get you so far. Next season was going to be big for Pryor and now because he sold his Sportsmanship Award for 500 bucks he is going to miss half of his senior season, that is if he even decides to return for his senior season. There are talks now that he is going to go pro because of this, which I think would greatly hurt his future career, because he has not shown that he is ready yet and his draft stock is not very high (4th or 5th round in my opinion). This whole situation upsets me, not that I’m a huge OSU fan (I’m not) but rather because I am consistently seeing more and more student athletes making stupid decisions like these football players did. In my opinion, you’re going to school for free, if you keep your head down and work hard for three maybe four years you’ll have your chance of making large amounts of money. So next time you have the urge to sell your gold pants for 1000 bucks just say no.

Another thing that has got me fuming right now is LeBron James’ comments to the media that he thinks that NBA teams should contract and have three to four all-stars per team. He says it’s fun and good for the game. Now for those of you who don’t know I despise LeBron James’. Used to love him in Cleveland but ever since “The Decision” he has been public enemy number one in my book. And reading these comments makes me despise him even more. He sold out, he realizes he sold out, and now he is trying to cover it up by saying more and more people should do it. I almost couldn’t finish reading the article when I read his comments. That upsets me so much and it should upset any NBA fan out there. Yes he has a point there are a few teams in the NBA that look like a high school team (Minnesota and Sacramento), but still I wouldn’t want to see Kobe, Melo, and CP3 be like you know what let’s all go team up and lead the Kings to a NBA title, no it’s not good for the game, the league needs teams that great teams will beat up on. Everyone want’s parity and I agree parity is good to a certain extent. However, if all the teams are of equal level then you’ll have a lot more of teams beating up on each other and a lot more superstars getting hurt, which will lose the NBA more money than they already are losing. So the whole idea upsets me and the fact that LeBron is the one who said it upsets me even more. I could live happily if I never have to hear LeBron talk again.

The last thing that is on my mind and this doesn’t upset me it actually is something that I am marveling at and yet a very few amount of people actually realize this is taking place and for those who have realized it probably don’t understand how significant it is. I turn your attention to the National Hockey League. The Pittsburgh Penguins have won 15 out of their past 17 games. Quite impressive, but not the  most impressive stat of their season. Their all-galaxy center Sidney Crosby or better known as Sid the Kid has a point in the past 23 straights games. And he leads the league in goals with 29 this season. Ever since Crosby entered the league he was titled the next great one. The next Wayne Gretzky. A lot of pressure for someone so young (I hate when young kids get these huge expectations put on them, it just sets them up to fail), but he has handled it well and become the player everyone wanted him to become. This streak solidifies him in my opinion as the greatest player in the league right now and I believe when his career is all said and done he will be right up there with the likes of Gretzky and Lemieux.

Ksports Report

by ckonstan on Dec.20, 2010, under Uncategorized

So I have decided to switch up how I blog recently, I’ve decided instead of focusing on one particular story I and writing a story on that I am going to pick stories that are relevant and give you my opinion.

First off let’s get right too it and talk about the Giants vs Eagles craziness. For those of you who don’t know what happened (if you don’t know stop reading my blog please) the Giants had a 21 point lead with about 8 minutes to go in the fourth they ended up losing by a touchdown in regulation. They won on a walk off punt return by Desean Jackson as time expired. For those who witnessed the game it had the feeling as one of those games you’ll remember exactly what you were doing at the time Jackson returned the punt for a touchdown. This game had so much drama capped off by the fact why the heck did punter Matt Dodge punt the ball to Desean Jackson, the man is arguably the best kick returner in the league right now not named Devin Hester. He had no business kicking the ball to him granted, but the dude is a rookie and it was a high snap, I would have freaked out just the same as him. You can’t put all the blame on him, the Giants defense did give up 21 points in 8 minutes and the Giants offense didn’t do anything in the fourth quarter. So to put the blame all on a rookie punter is absurd and to say his job and career are in jeopardy is outrageous, the man is a just barely legal enough to buy a lottery ticket. Give me a break he’s fine, he made a mistake but so did 40 other Giants players in that final 8 minutes.

Another thing that is hot on my mind right now is Brett Favre. The man is 180 years old he should just call it quits. Don’t get me wrong I love the guy, he’s a legend and his love for the game is unmatched. He has been starting football games since I was one year old. I only know the NFL with Brett Favre in it. So the other night when he didn’t start I honestly felt like my whole world was falling apart. It was like when a kid is told Santa isn’t real for the first time, you refuse to believe it until you actually see your parents put all the presents under the tree. That’s what Favre not starting was like for me. Even though he was ruled in active I still firmly believed he was going to start until I saw the Vikings break huddle and number 4 wasn’t under center. Truly the end of an era and end of a legend. I hope selfishly Ted Thompson, the Packers GM, signs Brett to a one day deal so he can retire a Packer. Highly unlikely, but if there are football gods I hope they make this happen.

Another thing that has been on my mind lately is the city of Boston. Now for those who don’t know I am a huge Red Sox fan. My mother is from Boston and though she doesn’t cheer for Boston sports very much I pick up her slack. I love all Boston sports teams except for the Celtics. I can’t stand Paul Pierce, not a big fan of Doc Rivers either (I’ve honestly never heard him give on useful piece of advice in any in-game huddle I’ve ever heard), however, other than the Celtics I bleed Boston sports. Especially the Red Sox. Coming into this offseason I was telling my good friend Ryan (an avid baseball fan like myself, loyal Cubs fan…god bless his soul) that the Red Sox are boring and they needed to add players that made us fans excited again. Big Papi is great but he doesn’t make me want to sit through 9 innings.  So this offseason I was hopeful we were going to add some players like that…and we did. Adding all-star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez was good for me, but adding on top of him Carl Crawford for 7 years $142 dollars. I almost cried with excitement. I got the text to my phone from ESPN at 1 in the morning and when I saw it I called some of my baseball friends, none answered, but from the voicemail’s I left them they knew I was excited. Add on top of that the Patriots look untouchable. They’ll only lose when Brady cuts his hair and that’s never happening unless Gisele goes all biblical and cuts his hair like Sampson, I see the Pats winning the Super Bowl, honestly, who’s going to beat them? No one.

The last thing I want to talk about and I’ll make it brief is the UCONN women winning 88 straight games. I don’t care if you’re guy, girl, alien, baby, or Moby Dick, winning 88 games straight in anything is impressive. They haven’t lost a game in three years. If you’re a Junior on this team you’ve never lost a collegiate game…never..not one. That’s insane. They play in the toughest conference in women’s basketball and they run through teams. Maya Moore might be a top five draft pick in the NBA (not really, but wouldn’t that be something else) and Tiffany Hayes is an All-American and player of the year candidate and she’s not even the best player on her team. I mean seriously this is something special. I personally hope they go 39-0 for the third straight year this year. Nothing makes me laugh more then a Geno Auriemma press conference (nothing like those Italians on their soap box). So go on UCONN win 100 straight I’m rooting for you. I’ll leave you with this fact Maya Moore is a 4 year starter, she’s lost a total of 4 games. She is 122-4 in her four years at UCONN. Think about that for awhile.

Opportunity Lost

by ckonstan on Dec.01, 2010, under National Basketball Association

All day I’ve been thinking about starting up blogging again and now that I have more free time on my hands I decided there is no more perfect time to start blogging again then now.

For those of you who don’t know that much about me Michael Jordan is my hero, sure the man has some personal flaws, but who doesn’t. I’m not excusing or condoning any of his actions that cost him his marriage and money, but as an athlete in my mind there is no one that comes close to him as a competitor and as a winner. I’ve been sitting on my couch for an hour now watching old highlight tapes of MJ and while watching I was thinking LeBron could make that move or Kobe could hit that shot, so what was it that set Jordan apart from everyone else?

For me I’ve read a lot of articles and a few books on MJ and all of them say the same thing. The man was the biggest competitor the world has ever seen. Regardless if it was in a game or practice or even on a ping pong table, MJ didn’t want to just beat you, he wanted to destroy you. He wanted to make you go home completely P.O.’ed and thinking why do I even try against this guy. So, while I was sitting on my couch thinking about what set him apart I came to the conclusion that Michael simply wanted it more then anyone else in the world.

I watched his Hall of Fame induction speech and I honestly laughed through a lot of it. If anyone else in the world had gone up and given the speech he gave we would be sitting talking to amongst one another thinking wow this guy is so arrogant and full of himself. If you haven’t seen the speech MJ talks for 24 minutes and for about 20 min he is standing up there “thanking” (calling out) all the players and coaches and really people who motivated him to become who he is. The man is arrogant the man is confident, but that’s what made Michael who he was. He never changed for the world or people around him rather he made his fans and people around the world realize that he wasn’t changing and if they got passed that they would witness something special.

Michael Jordan was, and forever will be the greatest basketball player of all time in my opinion I don’t think anyone will ever come around who will be as competitive as he was and who will want it more then he did. The man was insane. I bring this up now because as you probably have heard the experiment down in South Beach isn’t going so well. They have shot out to a dismal start of 10-8 and honestly they don’t look like they will make it out of the Divisional round of the playoffs. The team is fighting amongst themselves they are playing their coach, which is absolutely ridiculous, and they are pretty much making excuses instead of looking in the mirror and simply saying we are not that good.

I will talk about what I think is wrong with the Heat in an article to come, but right now I want to talk about LeBron. I used to love LeBron when he was in Cleveland he was fun to watch. He made his teammates better, he made plays that left your jaw touching the floor, and most of all he was a superstar who you got the impression didn’t think he was above the game. Boy was I played, it’s amazing how my feelings towards him have changed over a few month span. I don’t watch the Heat play they make me sick, Bosh isn’t good Wade is having an identity crisis, and LeBron is “not having any fun”, but I blame this whole entire thing on LeBron.

When LeBron came into the league he had one thing in mind…that was to be the next MJ. He wanted to be a global icon he wanted to win championships and he wanted to be the guy that everyone knew was the best player. Up until this year, yes he was the best player in the league and yes he fooled me into thinking he could be MJ level. But then this past summer he did something that I call “selling out” he took the easy road out. He thought joining up with two of his buddies would win him championships. Something that you would never see MJ do, MJ wanted to crush his best friends, he wanted to destroy anyone and everyone, even in practice if you made a mistake MJ was on you because he wanted to win so badly. LeBron recently got called out by Miami Heat coach Erik Spolestra for not taking practice seriously enough. Now, I know LeBron is a fun loving guy, but not taking practice seriously enough? Common LeBron if you really wanted to be MJ level you can’t leave Cleveland, that’s like MJ leaving Chicago and going to Utah to join Stockton and Malone. You never would have seen that happen. Also, you never would have heard Bulls coach Phil Jackson tell Michael to take practice more serious. If anything you might have heard him lighten up.

The reason I’m fuming right now about LeBron is because he had the chance to be immortal he had the chance to be like MJ. However, he took the easy road out and threw away that chance. Making it more clear to me than ever that Michael Jeffery Jordan is one of a kind. We will never find another one of him on this planet, not in my lifetime nor in any lifetime in the future.

Heated Decision

by ckonstan on Jul.16, 2010, under National Basketball Association

So I know it’s been awhile since my last post and I know there’s a lot of things that have happened in sports since I began my summer vacation and put writing on the back burner, but I felt like the timing was right to return to writing..so I’m back. No need for an hour long show to declare I was back or decide where I was going to take my writing talents to, much like Micheal Jordan I’m avoiding the fanfare and getting back to work.

So the big thing on everyone’s mind right now is LeBron James and how he has decided to take his talents to Miami and play with Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh as a member of the Heat. The funny thing is though most people don’t care that he went to Miami, what gets them riled up is how he announced he was going to Miami. He had an hour long show to announce something that took literally one second to say. Now I’m not going to get into how I feel about how he handled it, all I’m going to say is that I think he handled it poorly and it sadly I think is going to define a good chunk of his career, but that’s it, no further comment on LeBron’s “Decision”. I’ve decided to cut out that hour of television that I painstakingly sat through.

So now that LeBron James is in Miami with his good friends Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh my big question is..will this really work? You have two superstars on your team and another all-star. I don’t put Bosh in the superstar category, the truth is yeah he is a good Power Forward in the NBA, but he’s not a superstar, I’d rather have at least three other power forwards before Bosh (Pau Gasol, Amar’e Stoudemire, and Kevin Garnett). So two superstars who for their entire careers have played with the ball in their hands at all times. Now that their together and you through in a good low post player, both LeBron and Wade will have to learn how to play off the ball, which is something neither of them have done their entire career. Which is why I think I am still skeptical on whether or not this experiment by Pat Riley will really work. Now I must say if their were two superstars in this league that could pull off playing together and making it work…it would be Dwayne Wade and LeBron James, both guys want to win championships and both seem like they would make sacrifices to do so, but I’m not sold on this working for three reasons.

Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, and LeBron James

Reason Number One: I don’t think that Pat Riley and the Heat have enough money left over to surround these three players with enough talent to win a championship (at least in the first two years) because let’s face it those three are taking up almost 90 percent of the Heat’s salary cap. Now, last time I checked you don’t play just three guys on the court so the Heat have to fill their roster with players who are willing to take a huge pay cut and play at the league minimum. I’m not going to explain how the salary cap works because that would just confuse the casual reader. However, basic rundown of the salary cap is that a team is allowed to sign players to fill their roster at the league minimum (there is not set league minimum because it fluctuates per player depending on their years of service in the NBA) to fill out their roster. The Heat have already signed a few players such as three point specialist Mike Miller and center Big Z from the Cavs. So their you go there’s five players, but they still need about six or seven to complete their roster..and let me remind you, they have no money! So that’s reason number one.

Reason Number Two: Their will be a power struggle between LeBron James and Dwayne Wade. Again maybe not in the first two seasons because they’ll still be in their kind of honeymoon stage, but after that each player is going to want it to be their team and when they realize that it’s both of their teams they are going to want to be the go to guy. Now we all know its Dwayne Wade’s team, he’s been their his whole career, he’s won a championship there, so it’s his team no matter what LeBron says. However, I can just see it..the Heat are down one with six seconds to go and LeBron and Wade are fighting over who gets to take the final shot, I just don’t see two mega egos like theirs coexisting, especially when you through in Bosh’s ego (who knows why this guy has an ego, he’s made it to the playoffs twice in a seven year career…hardly room to brag)

Reason Number Three: The NBA doesn’t want to see this. I can already tell you who is going to be in the NBA Finals and the Finals are a year away. There is no one in the West that can beat the Lakers, that has been known for the past few years, but it still remains the same. And now there is an unbeatable team in the East, the Heat. So pretty much their are two teams in the NBA that everyone is chasing and in a league that tries to sell its fans parity, there is an obvious disparity in talent. No teams will be able to compete with either of these teams and that is not what David Stern wanted to see. This doesn’t bode well for the NBA, especially since they are facing an inevitable lockout next season, so I know David Stern is on his knees praying tonight that this doesn’t last more then two seasons.

So there it is..I finally voiced my opinion on the LeBron James situation, I am now one of thousands of people. I could be wrong about how it all plays out in Miami it all could work out and they win 7 or so championships, I don’t see it happening, but it could, because it’s sports and if I’ve learned anything covering and following sports my whole life it’s this…expect the unexpected.

Tough Call

by ckonstan on May.11, 2010, under National Basketball Association

One thing that set Michael Jordan apart from every other player in the NBA.  It wasn’t  just his scoring or his inhuman competitive nature, but it was his ability and his want to defend and shut down the opposing teams best player. Jordan loved the challenge and he loved sticking it to other players on the offensive end and he loved shutting out the opposing teams best player. He lived to humiliate and destroy the opposing team in every facet of the game. In this years NBA playoffs we got a little glimpse of another NBA superstar who was up to the challenge of shutting down the opposing teams biggest threat.

In the LA Lakers first round match-up against the Oklahoma City Thunder the Lakers were struggling shutting down the Thunders point guard Russell Westbrook. After the Thunder tied the series at two games apiece the Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant told legendary coach Phil Jackson that he’s guarding Westbrook. From there out Kobe guarded Westbrook and LA went on to win the series in six games. Kobe is an eight time All-NBA first team defender, he has the mindset like Jordan of “there is no way you’re getting by me”. After Kobe switched to guard Westbrook it totally changed the dynamic of the series. Westbrook no longer got to the paint whenever he wanted and he was forced to shoot outside shots, which was ultimately the Thunders downfall.

I have always thought the ability to want to shut down the other teams opposing best player and successfully doing so is what sets the great players from the immortal players. There’s a lot of great players in the league, mainly a lot of great scorers in the NBA, but most of them don’t to anything on the defensive side of the ball. Look at Carmelo Anthony, the dude is one of the best dangerous scorers in the NBA, but you would never see Melo say “hey coach I’m going to shut down the other teams best player”, you just won’t, mainly because Carmelo couldn’t do that.

This brings me to my main point, heading into tonight’s game five match up between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Boston

Boston Celtics Guard Rajon Rondo

Celtics reports out of Cleveland are that LeBron James wants to guard the Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo. To give you a little background everyone always talks about the “Big Three” in Boston, Keven Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce, let me be clear in saying that this team wouldn’t make it out of the first round of the playoffs without Rajon Rondo. He is the best player on this Celtics team. He scores about 15 a game, he rebounds about 8 a game, and he averages about 12 assists per game. He is in my opinion the best rebounding guard in the NBA. He’s a first team All-NBA defender and he’s one of the best facilitators in the NBA. Up until this point in the series, which is tied at two games apiece, Rondo has single handedly kept the Celtics in games and won them games. In a pivotal game four in Boston, he had 29 points, 18 rebounds, and 13 assist….18 rebounds for a guy that is 6 1′ are you kidding me? Watching this game I was amazed with his ability to read exactly where balls were going to bounce of the rim. If you ever watch old tapes of NBA game Celtics legend Bill Russell had an uncanny ability to read were balls were going to go off the rim and he’d snag them away so easily. Rondo reminds me a little bit of Russell in the regard, minus the fact that Rondo is about 9 inches shorter than Russell was. Anyway, two things came to my mind when I first heard that LeBron wants to try and guard Rondo.

The first was LeBron wants to be remembered like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant as guys who wanted to shut down the opposing teams biggest threat. I get that, LeBron is a great player and when it’s all said and done he may have the greatest stats ever and most championships and most money ever. The thing is though he will never be Michael Jordan for one reason. Sure he can score and yeah it’s cool that he wants to defend the other teams best player I get that, but he’ll never be Micheal Jordan because LeBron James is to nice. If you watch LeBron he’s very buddy buddy with his teammates and with the opposing teams players. After a hard fought game you’ll see LeBron hug the opposing teams best players and shake hands and what not, even if the Cavs lost. You would never see MJ do that. He hated opposing teams players because of the simple fact that they weren’t on his teams. If you wore another jersey other than a Bulls jersey Michael wanted to destroy you..humiliate you. After a loss he’d be so upset people couldn’t talk to him. You’d never see MJ lose a than go hug the other teams best player who hit the winning shot…never. The NBA has become to friendly and buddy-buddy, which is why I think we’ll never see another MJ. So that’s the first thing that came to my mind when I heard LeBron wanted to guard Rondo, he want’s to be remembered like Michael.

The second thing I immediately thought was LeBron you’re an idiot. I like LeBron I respect his game and I am always amazed watching him. However, I will forever and always be a Kobe Bryant fan. So when I heard the LeBron wanted to guard Rondo I thought well he saw Kobe shut down Westbrook so he thinks he can shut down Rondo, the one player that has been beating them this series. It’s a nice thought by LeBron, but the fact is he can’t guard Rondo. The biggest difference between Kobe guarding Westbrook and LeBron guarding Rondo is size. Westbrook is a big point guard he is listed at 6 3′ he may even be 6 4′. Kobe stands at 6 6′. So that is a two or three inch height difference. Not that big of a difference and Kobe is extremely athletic so he can match Westbrook’s quickness. Seemed like a no brainier so Kobe on Westbrook makes sense. Now to LeBron guarding Rondo. LeBron is 6 8′ and 250 pounds. Granted he can move that body faster and quicker then anyone in this world can move that big of a body, but Rondo is 6 1′ 170. Rondo’s game is quickness and speed and there is absolutely no way LeBron can keep Rondo in front of him. The other thing is that LeBron isn’t a great on ball defender. He made his first All-NBA defense this year for his work on help side defense, which he is the best in the NBA at. But when it comes to on ball defending he’s just average. People are giving him credit for “shutting down” Paul Pierce this series, but the truth is Pierce is the easiest guy to defend ( Pierce ranks right up there with Matt Barnes as my least favorite player in the NBA) he has the slowest release ever. The only way he scores in the NBA is if he has a smaller defender on him who he can shoot over (a slow release doesn’t matter if the guy guarding you is shorter than you) or if

Cleveland Cavaliers Small Forward LeBron James

he has a taller power forward guarding him who he can blow by and score. But if you put any athletic small forward on Pierce he is not effective. So all this talk about LeBron shutting down Pierce is much-a-do about nothing. The fact is LeBron is going to cost his team big time if he decides to guard Rondo. He will be drawn out of help defense scenarios, which is where he thrives, and Rondo will be able to get by him almost at will.

I think that this move by LeBron is stupid, but at the same time I get it. He wants to be remembered as the best, and the best players do these kind of things. If he is able to shut down Rondo, then he’ll be on the right track to becoming one of the immortals, but as of right now I think it’s a stupid move that could cost his team the series.

To Much Money for Sugar

by ckonstan on May.02, 2010, under Boxing

Over the past two decades boxing has become somewhat of a forgotten sport. All the older generation fans miss the days of Ali and Frazier. They miss George Foreman and Rocky Marciano. The gripe on boxing that it has changed and it isn’t about the fighting anymore, they say that it is only about the money and looking good. Yes, the sport of boxing has changed, it lacks the signature moments such as Howard Cosell saying “Down goes Frazier!” after George Foreman knocked him out in 1973 for the World Heavy Weight Championship. We miss the dominant Boxers like Muhammad Ali and Rocky Marciano. Sure, the sport lacks those signature moments now, but it still is one of the most exciting sports to watch when you have two good boxers going against each other, like we did last night when the “Pretty Boy” of boxing, Floyd Mayweather Jr, put is 40-0 record up against “Sugar” Shane Mosley’s 46-5 record.

This fight wasn’t the fight that everybody wanted to see. They wanted to see the self proclaimed best boxer ever, Mayweather, fight Manny Pacquiao, who is ranked by Ring Magazine the #1 Pound For Pound boxer in the world right now. However, after both sides couldn’t agree on a drug testing format the mega-fight fell through. Each boxer rescheduled to fight someone else and Mayweather scheduled to fight the former WBA Welterweight Super Champion Shane Mosely.

After starting his boxing career in 1993 Shane Mosley quickly climbed to the top of the boxing world. In the beginning of the

"Sugar" Shane Mosley

year 2000, 7 years after he started his professional career, Mosley boasted a perfect 34-0 record. However, after a loss to Phillip Holiday knocked him from the ranks of the unbeaten in 2000 Mosley’s career began to go the opposite direction. He lost four straight marquee fights from 2000-2003 to Holiday, Oscar De La Hoya, Vernon Forrest, and than again to Forrest 6 months later. His career got an even bigger black mark in 2003 when he was charged with using performance enhancing drugs. After the fog cleared from his steroid conviction cleared Mosley began to find new life. As he began to get older he began winning fights again and was regaining his form from younger years. In 2009 he knocked off one of Mexico’s best fighters in Antonio Margarito even though he was a 4-1 underdog. That fight put him back on the map as one of the top pound for pound boxers in the world. So coming into the Mayweather fight many thought that he could have a chance to knock off the “Pretty Boy” of boxing.

Floyd Mayweather’s boxing career has been well documented. He is arguably the most recognizable face in the sport and he no doubt has the biggest mouth. Coming into his fight with Shane Mosley, Mayweather boasted a remarkable 40-0 record. However, for most of his career Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr was widely regarded as a fighter who lacked a marquee win. Sure he was beating everyone he boxed, but was he boxing anyone really that talented. In May of 2007 he began to put some of his critics to rest when he beat the “Golden Boy” of boxing Oscar De La Hoya in a 12 round split decision fight. Still, many people still didn’t believe in Money Mayweather, his Orthodox style of boxing was causing a lot of people to doubt how good he really was. (Orthodox style of boxing is a style that is more defensive, you protect with your shoulder and often lean into punches which allows you to block almost everything, it is for boxers who are quick on counter punches, it often draws a lot of criticism because people think that it means you can’t take a punch) The fight that began to show just how good he really was when in July of 2007 he knocked out Ricky Hatton, the British boxer who at the time was widely considered one of the best pound for pound boxers in the world. Mayweather dominated the fight and in the tenth round had a technical knock out which to this day is one of the biggest combo punches I’ve ever seen landed. After that fight he drew a lot of criticism though because he announced his retirement (which in boxing means nothing). In 2009 he returned to boxing and defeated Juan Manuel Marquez who was considered a good boxer, but not a great boxer. So coming into the fight against Mosley, Mayweather still had a lot of

Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr

questions that could be answered.

In the first two rounds of last nights fight it seemed like it was going to be all “Sugar” Shane Mosley. He was pinning Mayweather back and landing some strong punches, including a second round punch that sent Mayweather to his knees. However, after that it was all Mayweather. He owned the next ten rounds and he put on an absolute boxing clinic. He never had the knock out punch going, but he had an array of punches that continually found their mark on Mosley’s head. Mosley never had an answer for Money Mayweather and Mayweather won on a unanimous decision. It really was an impressive night of boxing for the self proclaimed greatest boxer ever. He showed us what everyone was wondering..and that was could he rebound and win a fight after getting it handed to him early. He did that last night and I think he finally put to rest all of his critics and we now know that “Money” is for real.

Two Sides to the Story

by ckonstan on May.01, 2010, under National Football League

If we learned anything from the Dez Bryant and Jeff Ireland situation it should be that we shouldn’t rush to conclusions before we know both sides of the story. If you were like me and you read that in wide receiver Dez Bryant’s pre-draft meeting with the Miami Dolphins he was asked a question by the Dolphins GM, Jeff Ireland, if his mother was a prostitute. If you were like me and just saw that you almost had to read it at least 12 times to make sure you had just read what you had thought you read. I remember asking myself what in the world is Ireland doing. It seemed that he had just asked this question out of nowhere and that is something that you just don’t ask, especially to someone that you might want playing for your organization. So for the next few days Ireland’s name was being dragged around in the mud by the media and members of the football community. It no doubt was bringing him loads of embarrassment and pain and we all thought rightfully so. Even though most of the public knows that Dez Bryant comes from a rough upbringing and many people are concerned about his character issues, but how could someone, especially a GM, ask such a rude question. But as the days passed and more information spilled out we have now learned that we were not given all information surrounding the story, we had one side of the story, Dez Bryant’s, but as always there’s two sides to every story and when we learned Ireland’s side it changes everything.

Miami Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland

As the General Manager of any professional organization prior to a draft you always bring in players that your team is interested in them and you run them through workouts and than you conduct interviews with that player. A majority of the questions that are asked are football based, but also a fair number of the questions have to deal with the players background, his family, and any past complications that player has had (common complications that players deal with is either alcohol abuse or marijuana use). Now, when this story was leaked to the media we were told that Ireland just straight up asked Bryant if his mother was a prostitute. However, now as more information is being given to us we have learned from two sources close with the situation that there was allegedly a dialogue going between Ireland and Bryant talking about his (Bryant’s) upbringing, what his relationships with his siblings were and then ultimately Ireland asked Bryant what his father did for a job when he was a kid, and so ensued the following sequence:

“My dad was a pimp.”

“What did your mom do [for a living]?”

“She worked for my dad.”

“Your mom was a prostitute?”

“No, she wasn’t a prostitute.”

So you’re telling me that the media and members of the NFL have been tearing Jeff Ireland down, ready to tie a noose around his neck and hang him because he asked really a logical question that in these circumstances makes perfect sense. When you see how and when this question was asked it makes sense. It’s not a bad question, rather, it’s a very logical question. I’ll be honest if I was interviewing a prospective player and he told me his dad was a pimp and his mother “worked” for his dad. I wouldn’t even bat an eye before asking the exact same question Ireland did. I’m not saying that Ireland doesn’t deserve to give Dez Bryant an apology. He does..now should he feel bad for asking the question? No he shouldn’t because it made sense to ask the question given that circumstance. If this is exactly how it went down I doubt will really ever know, but what we do know is that before we rush to conclusions about Ireland, let’s remember that there is usually two sides to a story and let’s hear both sides before we are ready to hang a guy for asking a logical question.

Dallas Cowboys Wide Receiver Dez Bryant

Do I have a problem with Ireland asking that question? No, I don’t, I think he could have worded it better, but there really is no nice way to ask if your mom is a prostitute..there just isn’t. The one thing I do have a problem with though is that every professional organization hires college scouts to scout the most talented players college football and they also hire private investigators to do background checks on every player that they are interested in. This is a fact, there’s no questions about whether a team has these guys or not, they do and they have one job. Find out all the information you can about a certain player we tell you about, get that information and give it back to us so that when we bring these guys in for interviews we already know pretty much everything about them. So here in-lies the big question for me. Did Ireland really not know Bryant’s background, because if he didn’t he needs to fire his college scouts and private investigators immediately, or did he already know and just want to hear it from Bryant himself. This I think is the bigger issue. If your a GM, it’s your job to know everything about a player you are looking to bring into your organization. So if he didn’t know than he’s a bad GM because that’s his job, if he did know and ask the question anyway, what does that say about him as a person. If he wants players to play for his organization they need to be able to trust him. Either way it shines bad light on Ireland and regardless of whether or not he asked the question GM’s all around the NFL need to learn that you need to tread lightly when talking with a player about his family.

NBA Postseason Awards

by ckonstan on Apr.26, 2010, under National Basketball Association

With the NBA postseason well underway it’s about time we hand out this seasons awards. It will be my first annual post season awards. I will name the MVP, Rookie of the Year (I will refer to this as ROY the rest of the story), most improved player, defensive player of the year, and the first ever Most Likely to Make David Stern Lose Sleep at Night award. I will also name my All-NBA First Team and the first ever All-NBA Underrated Team. So without further ado let’s get started.

My MVP of this season is without question LeBron James. The guy put up numbers that haven’t been seenin the modern era of the NBA. He averaged a shade under 30 points per game (he easily could have averaged 30 if he really cared), a little over 7 rebounds per game, and a hair over 8 assists per game. He was the best player on the best team in the NBA and is even more deserving of the MVP award then he was last year. In my opinion LeBron James is capable of winning the MVP award the next 10-12 years. His talent is unmatchable, no one can stop him. He’s to big and to quick which allows him to get to the rim whenever he wants. He’s also started to add a consistent jump shot to his repertoire which makes him that much more dominant. The only

Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James

way he doesn’t win the MVP award for next decade is if he (god forbid) gets injured, or voters for the MVP award just get tired of him winning it so they give it to another player who is less deserving. Those are the only ways I don’t see him winning it. So for the 2009-2010 NBA season my MVP is LeBron James (go ahead and jot him down as my pick for MVP for the next decade).

My ROY of the 2009-2010 is a little different then who most people have. Most people have the Sacramento Kings guard Tyreke Evans and granted Evans led all rookies in scoring (20 per game) and he is exciting to watch and he made the god awful Kings a little less awful, and yes Evans has the intangibles of a great player, but he turned the ball over way to much (3 per game) and he was a very inconsistent shooter. He shot just a little over 20 percent from three point range and he shot just over 70 percent from the free throw line. He will be a great player, but he’s not my ROY. My ROY is the Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry. Curry may have got off to a slower start then Evans, but he finished the season on a high. He averaged 18 points per game and his shooting percentages were great for anyone on a team that tries to shoot the ball every 7 seconds, nonetheless he was a rookie. He shot almost 50 percent from the field, almost 45 percent from three point range, and almost 90 percent from the free throw line. If a magic genie granted me one player in the NBA’s jump shot I’d pick Curry’s (Shawn Marion’s would be my last pick). His jumper is so fluid and he gave the Warriors a shot to win every night. Look for Curry to be a staple at All-Star games to come because he has the makings of a super star and that’s why he’s my ROY.

My Most Improved Player of the Year was probably my most difficult award to give out. Now I know that the official award winner of the 2009-2010 season was the Houston Rockets point guard Aaron Brooks. And I couldn’t agree more, he led his team that dealt with injuries all year and he is well deserving of the award. So I’m going to name him my Most Improved Player of the Year award winner, but I also want to name another player that could have won this award and that is the Charlotte Bobcats shooting guard Gerald Wallace. He led his Bobcats team to their first ever playoff birth and was named to his first ever all-star game. How he didn’t receive more votes is way beyond me, but I wanted to give him a little shout out. He adds maturity to a very young team, as well as a very consistent scorer. If Aaron Brooks hadn’t jumped from “okay role player” to “legitimate threat to take over a game” in such a short time I think that Gerald Wallace could have walked away with this award. But since Brooks made such a name for himself this year I can’t deny him the award.

My Defensive Player of the Year is without a doubt the Orlando Magic’s center Dwight Howard. He lead the league in blocks with nearly 3 per game and rebounds with 13 a game. We haven’t seen such a dominant low post defender since Russell. Howard is an incredible specimen, he’s got shoulders as wide as the state of Delaware and has the hops to be able to dunk on a 13 foot hoop. Needless to say no one effects players shots in the paint like Howard. His offensive game is another story, but I’m not talking about his offensive game this is a defensive award. I can’t really say much more about his defensive stats, they are pretty self explanatory. He’s a defensive beast and he’s a once and a lifetime 7 foot center.

Now, for my Most Likely to Make David Stern Lose Sleep at Night award. In the past years I would have easily handed this award to Rasheed Wallace and said here you go, we know you’re going to lose your cool at least once every three games and Stern is going to have to suspend you a handful of times. However, this year Wallace was limited in minutes with the Celtics (thankfully) and so he wasn’t my winner this year. This years winner would have to go to Orlando Magics Matt Barnes. Barnes is my least favorite player in the NBA and every time I see this guy I just get mad. He has an awful attitude, he thinks he’s the best defender ever and he carries himself like he’s Michael Jordan when he hasn’t won a thing in his career so needless to say I can’t stand him.

Orlando Magics' Matt Barnes

He’s got the the rep as the leagues most hated player and just this year Stern had to hand out numerous fines to Barnes for running his mouth about officiating or flagrant fouls. He was up there as league leaders in technical fouls and is just a punk. It goes without saying that Stern is worried about this guy and he’s not looking forward to dealing with him for years to come. So congratulations Matt Barnes you are officially the winner of the biggest a-hole of the year award and you will no doubt account for numerous lost nights of sleep for the poor commissioner David Stern.

My All-NBA First Team Looks like this: At Center I have Dwight Howard, there’s really no argument here, the man is the biggest defensive force in the league, and when he wants to be dominant on the offensive end he is, if he can develop a consistent want to dominate on the offensive end he could challenge LeBron for the MVP award, until then though he will only make my First Team. At Power Forward I have Kevin Durant. Now, I know that the “Duranttula” is listed as a small forward, but on my All-NBA First Team he’s my power forward because I had to put him on my First Team. Durant became the youngest player in NBA history to lead the league in scoring and he took the step this year from great player to super star. He’s one of the most exciting players to watch and he is the only player in the league that will be able to challenge LeBron James for the MVP title. At small forward is LeBron James, I’m not even going to go into why he’s on my First Team, his name speaks its self. My shooting guard for my First Team is Kobe Bryant. Now, I know his numbers are down this year and I hate to say it, but it appears as if Kobe is beginning to lose his edge. He’s appearing more fragile then ever and playing so many games in the past two years is beginning to take a toll on his body. With that being said there is still no player I’d rather have in the closing minutes of a game then KB. He has that incredible killer instinct that so few players have. As long as he has that killer instinct he will be on my First Team. At point guard I have the Miami Heat’s Dwayne Wade. This was probably my hardest choice for me, because the New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul is one of my favorite players, but he was sidelined for most of the year with injuries. So the award for First Team All-NBA point guard will fall to Dwayne Wade. Wade is listed as a shooting guard, but on a team that lacks really any supporting talent Wade is asked to do everything, which includes facilitating the offense as a point guard. He is in the elite of the NBA and every night he is capable of dropping 50. He was in the top five in scoring and he gave his team a chance to win every night.

So to recap my All-NBA First Team:

Center: Dwight Howard

Power Forward: Kevin Durant

Small Forward: LeBron James

Shooting Guard: Kobe Byrant

Point Guard: Dwayne Wade

Here’s a few names of other players that are worthy of First Team, but didn’t quite make the cut. We’ll call them the honorable mentions: Atlanta Hawks shooting guard Joe Johnson, Utah Jazz point guard Derron Williams, Portland Trailblazers shooting guard Brandon Roy, Milwaukee Bucks center Andrew Bogut, Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook, Denver Nuggets shooting guard Carmelo Anthony, and the Los Angeles Lakers center Pau Gasol.

Now for my All-NBA Underrated Team. These guys are my picks if I had to pick a starting five of players who are underrated and under appreciated in the NBA. At center, I’d have to take the Los Angeles Clippers center Chris Kaman. Kaman made his first all-star game this year so hopefully fans are beginning to appreciate how good he actually is. He’s often overlooked because he plays on an LA team not named the Lakers. So that right there is why he’s often overlooked. The facts are Kaman has averaged a double-double for most of his career and has always been a consistent center. He plays on an awful team with a terrible supporting cast so he doesn’t win that many games, but he is a darn good center. At power forward I have David Lee of the New York Knicks. Now, I’ll be first to say I hate all New York teams regardless the sport, but you have to respect Lee’s game. He plays in the biggest media market in New York, he’s really the only white guy on his team, and he’s without a doubt their best player. If the Knicks didn’t have Lee, they’d win 20 games max, Lee can single-handedly win them 10 more games. He’s undervalued by the Media, but players and coaches in the NBA know just how valuable he is. He guarantees you a double-double every night and he’s a solid defender. At small forward I have the Indiana Pacers Danny Granger. Granger suffers from the “I’m forced to do everything for my team” disease, he’s a great scorer and would be one of the best complimentary players in the league, but because of how awful his team is, he’s forced to be a superstar, which he is just not capable of. If Granger went somewhere with a proven superstar he would help that player win championships. Granger is a streaky shooter who is capable of putting up 20 a night. He’s on a bad team so people fail to realize just how good he really is, but maybe if he goes elsewhere this summer people will begin to see his real worth. At shooting guard I have the Atlanta Hawks Joe Johnson. For years I’ve been saying that Johnson is the most underrated player in this league. He’s averaged over 20 points almost his entire career and he’s made an average Atlanta Hawks team a title contender. He wants the ball in big moments and he’s never afraid to take the big shot. His release is so quick on his jump shot it’s almost impossible to defend. If I had to pick one player to hit me a game winning shot with two seconds left Johnson would be in my top three (behind Kobe and Durant) he lacks the charisma that LeBron or Durant have so fans outside of Atlanta don’t appreciate him as much as they should, but if he goes to a bigger market this off-season people will begin to see his true worth. To round out the starting five my point guard is the Boston Celtics Rajon Rondo. Every game I watch of Rondo’s I continually get more and more impressed. He plays on a team that has three so called superstars in Pierce, Garnett, and Allen (I think all three are overrated and washed out) and he is clearly in my mind the best player on that

Atlanta Hawks' Joe Johnson

team. He is one of the league leaders in assists per game and assist to turnover ratio, and he also is up there with LeBron in league leaders in triple-doubles. He’s an exciting player to watch and if he played on a team that didn’t have so much baggage I think he’d be even better.

So to recap my All-NBA Underrated Team:

Center: Chris Kaman

Power Forward: David Lee

Small Forward: Danny Granger

Shooting Guard: Joe Johnson

Point Guard: Rajon Rondo

So there you have it. Those are my postseason NBA awards. If you don’t agree with them that is your problem. But after watching the entire NBA season and looking at stats, these are my choices for each and every award. I had to think long and hard about some, but in the end these are my picks and I’m sticking by them.

NFL Draft Recap

by ckonstan on Apr.25, 2010, under National Football League

This past Thursday the NFL had their draft and for the first time the first round was moved to Thursday night in prime time. This little experiment by the NFL turned out to be successful because they had their largest TV audience in draft history. The draft lacked the drama of some of the past years drafts. The top three picks were pretty set about a month ago with QB Sam Bradford going first to the St. Louis Rams, Ndamukong Suh going second to the Detroit Lions, and Gerald McCoy going third to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and this was one of the least talented drafts if your team was looking for skilled players (quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers). With the lack of those kind of players the draft lacked drama. However, even though this draft lacked drama there were a few story lines that I’d like to touch on, with one overpowering story line.

The first thing I’d like to touch on is how three out of the first four picks in this years NFL draft were out of the University of Oklahoma. Quarterback Sam Bradford was taken first, Defensive Tackle Gerald McCoy was taken third, and Offensive Tackle Trent Williams was taken fourth. When I was watching the first round I immediately noticed this and was shocked how the reporters covering the draft failed to make a big deal out of this. I thought that this was extremely impressive for the University of Oklahoma because it goes to show that coach Bob Stoops knows how to prepare his players for the NFL. They will be able to use that as a huge tool for their recruiting by saying that they produced three out of the top four picks in this past years draft. I really thought that this was one of the most understated stories of this years draft.

Another thing that that caught my attention during this years draft was how 9 out of the top 24 draft picks in this years draft were out of schools from the Big 12 Conference. A very impressive stat for the Big 12 conference. They have often been referred to as the most talented conference in the country and this just goes to show that they really are the go to conference in producing the best NFL talent. Anytime you put 3 or 4 guys in the first round is considered a good year, but the Big 12 put 9 in the top 24, which means that out of the first 24 picks in this years draft nearly 4o percent of the players were out of Big 12 schools. Truly remarkable, but again it went pretty much under the radar.

The biggest story line of this years NFL draft was Tim Tebow (could we expect anything less?). Before the draft Tebow was drawing a lot of attention in where would he end up being drafted. Many people and the so-called experts thought he would fall to the later rounds. Maybe a third or fourth round draft pick. Tebow has a poor release in his throwing motion and his ability to read zone defense is awful because he has never played in a pro-style offense, this was made clear in the senior bowl when he had a terrible performance in the Senior Bowl where he was unable to complete any pass over 11 yards and he had two turnovers. So questions were being raised about whether he could even play quarterback in the NFL. Then in the months leading up to the draft he came out and said he had changed his release and made it quicker and he had been working on his 3,5, and 7 step drops and had been watching film and learning how to play in a pro style offense. And before the draft we saw him on ESPN attending former NFL coach and current NFL announcer for ESPN, Jon Gruden’s, football camp. We saw that he was a leader and winner, but we still didn’t get the sense that he could be a franchise quarterback. So on draft night many people thought that his name wouldn’t be called in round one. Not only because there was still a lot of questions about how good he was, but because there was not a lot of need at quarterback for a lot of teams. Also factoring in the fact that he was at best the fourth best quarterback available in this years draft behind Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen, and Colt McCoy (I had him fifth, I still think the University of Cincinnati’s QB Tony Pike is better, but what do I know). So when the Denver Broncos announced that they had traded up with the Baltimore Ravens for the 25th overall pick to take Tim Tebow they had shocked the entire NFL community. It wasn’t the fact that the Broncos traded up to get the 25th pick, it’s that they picked Tebow with that pick. Clausen and McCoy (and my boy Pike) were still available so it made this pick even more perplexing. We know what the Broncos and coach Josh McDaniels get with Tebow. He’s a proven winner who is a great teammate, but what can he bring to this team? That still remains the question and we won’t know the answer until the season starts in the fall. What we do know is that the Broncos took a gamble and whether it will pay off is yet to be determined.

So that’s my recap of the 2010 NFL draft. I’m not going to go pick by pick and give the team a grade on their pick. I personally think that’s a whole punch of crap. We don’t know the effect any of these draft picks are going to have on their teams until we see them in action so that is why I’m not going to go pick by pick. All you need to know is that there was no overriding story line, other than Tebow going in the first round, there was no real drama. Now all we have to do is wait till the fall and see how much these draftees are worth. Until then, enjoy listening to the draft recap by draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. (biggest fraud in the world).

18 Can’t Miss Games

by ckonstan on Apr.21, 2010, under General, National Football League

Last night the NFL released the schedule for the 2010-2011 season in a special prime time show on ESPN. As an NFL fan I was looking forward to the release of the schedule, but I have to be honest I wanted to turn it off numerous times, because they try to make it like you were watching a dramatic movie every time a game was released. It was hard to watch that anti-climatic scene play out that I was almost forced to switch the channel to ABC’s Dancing With The Stars, but I didn’t and I stuck it out and watched the release show and have assembled a list of the top 18 games that you cannot miss this upcoming season. This list will count down in reverse order from the 18th can’t miss game to the first can’t miss game. (Note: all these games are picked with the assumption that: Brett Favre returns to play for the Minnesota Vikings, Sam Bradford is drafted #1 overall by the St. Louis Rams, Pete Carroll isn’t fired from the Seattle Seahawks by week 11, and Ben Roethlisberger isn’t in jail for sexually assaulting a 16 year old girl)

(Deep breath…okay here we go)

#18: Week 11, Sunday, November 21st. The Seattle Seahawks travel to New Orleans to play the defending Super Bowl Champions Saints. I find this game interesting because it is Pete Carroll’s first year back in the NFL after being the best college coach in football for the better half of the past decade. Now, I know it’s already going to be week eleven so we will already have a pretty good sense of how good they are under Pete Carroll, but I still look forward to seeing this match-up for one reason. Pete Carroll was often considered the greatest offensive mind of college football and he is going to face in my opinion the greatest offensive mind of professional football in Sean Payton. I find this match-up quite entertaining and that’s why it is my 18th can’t miss game of 2010-2011

#17: Week 14, Sunday, December 12th. The St. Louis Rams travel to New Orleans to face the Saints in a match-up of last years best teams and last years worst team(Worst is being nice). Again, I realize that it is already week 14 and Sam Bradford’s prospect as a future NFL quarterback are already going to be well documented, but I still want to see how he plays against the defending Super Bowl Champions in one the rowdiest home field in the NFL, the Super Dome. This game could be statement game for Bradford, if he’s having a bad rookie season he could give people some hope for next year if he had a good game in this game. And if he was already having a good year he could cement his name as a franchise quarterback in the NFL. Needless to say I’m excited to watch this game. (Feels weird to say excited, watching, and rams all in the same sentence)

#16. Week 15, Sunday, December 19th. The Green Bay Packers travel to New England to face off against Tom Brady’s Patriots. It’s the rematch of Super Bowl XXXI (my first football game I remember watching). I have this in the top 18 because it’s a match-up of two of the most storied organizations in NFL history and it’s a match-up of two the the NFL’s most electrifying offenses. Any time you have three time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady play someone with the title of Brett Favre’s heir, Aaron Rogers, it’s going to be a good game. Mark it on your calender.

#15. Week 17, Sunday, January 2nd. The Chicago Bears travel up to the Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field (not really anymore the Packers play on turf now) to face the Green Bay Packers. Now, I know this isn’t the first meeting between these two teams that absolutely hate each other, but I just don’t think it is going to be that exciting of a game. The Packers are a much better team then the Bears in every facet of the game. But I couldn’t leave this game out of my top 18 games (especially with lifelong Packer fan dad reading this article) because it is the Packers and the Bears and it is the last regular season game of the NFL so you don’t want to miss this game.

#14. Week 13, Monday, December 6th. The New York Jets travel the short trip up to New England to play the Patriots. Now, this isn’t the first meeting between these two teams (I have that meeting higher up..wait and see), but nonetheless this is shaping up to be one of the biggest rivalries in the NFL. The Jets are the talking-smack kind of team that if you’re not from New York you hate. The Patriots are the Yankee’s of the NFL. You hate them, you hate their coach who looks like a homeless man, you hate their quarterback not because he picks your teams defense apart, but because he’s married to super model Gisele Bundchen. It’s a match-up of the two most hated teams in the NFL…how could it not make my list (twice)?

#13. Week 12, Sunday, November 28th. The San Diego Chargers head to Indianapolis to face the Super Bowl Runner-Up Colts’. The Chargers last year were the one team in the AFC that could supposedly knock off the Colts in the playoffs, but the Chargers had a tankapalooza in the playoffs last year and got stomped but the New York Jets. So they never had the chance to prove just how good of a team they were. They will be looking to show the league how good they are in this game. Only problem they face off against 4 time MVP Peyton Manning. Should cause some pretty interesting drama. You have two polar opposites at the QB spot. The extremely focused Peyton Manning for the Colts and the over exuberant Phillip Rivers for the Chargers. Should be a good game.

#12. Week 11, Sunday, November 21st. Brett Favre’s Minnesota Vikings play host to Favre’s former team the Green Bay Packers. This will be the second time these teams meet, which is why I have this at #12 not higher, but it will still provide a great game. This game was one of the most anticipated games of the year last year and again it will be another one of the greatly anticipated games. It’s a big divisional game for both teams and whoever wins the first game will have a big advantage in the division and this game could ultimately who wins the NFC North. Pretty big implications for a game even with out the Favre vs Packers drama, but with that thrown on top it makes it just that much more exciting.

#11. Week 8, Sunday, October 31st. It’s a match-up of the past two years Super Bowl Champions. The Pittsburgh Steelers travel down to New Orleans to play the Saints. Now, a lot of hub-bub has been made about this game and how great of a match-up it is. I personally think its not a good match-up at all. The Steelers stink, they didn’t make the playoffs last year, their franchise quarterback is world class a-hole and their defense is old and slow. I think the Saints are going to destroy them, but you can’t leave a match-up of the past two Super Bowl Champs out of you’re top 18 games to watch. So this game makes the list, but I still think Sean Payton’s going to run up the score somewhere in the 42-17 range.

#10. Week 8, Sunday, October 31st. The Minnesota Vikings travel to New England to play the Patriots. When I saw this game

New England Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady

come up on each teams schedules I thought this was going to be one of the best games of the year. The Patriots haven’t played the Vikings since October of 2006 when the Patriots routed the Vikings 31-7. Both teams have changed a lot these past years and this game will be entertaining. Two first ballot Hall-of-Famers in Brett Favre and Tom Brady squaring off against each other. It’s going to be a shootout. Both teams are solid defensive teams, but both quarterbacks know how to pick defenses apart. Should be a fun to watch high scoring football game where the winner is going to have to score more than 40 points.

#9. Week 6, Sunday, October 17th. The Baltimore Ravens travel up to New England to face off against the Patriots. This is a rematch of last years first round AFC playoff match-up where the Ravens trampled the Patriots 33-14 in Foxboro. The Patriots are looking for revenge and the Ravens are looking to show it wasn’t a fluke. Pretty good plot line if you ask me. The Patriots need to improve their run defense if they hope to slow down the Ravens. If the Ravens expose the Patriots are still weak against the run, it will show open for the doors for other teams to solely run against the Pats, which could lead to a long season in Bean Town.

#8. Week 12, Sunday, November 28th. The Minnesota Vikings travel to Washington D.C. to face off against the new look Washington Redskins led by new quarterback Donovan McNabb. I find this match-up very interesting because Brett Favre and Donovan McNabb have had some pretty good match-ups in the past, even though they were both playing for different teams. This game will also show how well the Redskins stack up against the elite teams of the NFC. If the Redskins want to prove that they are contenders they have to be able to beat the Vikings. Should be an interesting game, I’m still not going to be used to seeing McNabb in maroon and gold.

#7. Week 2, Sunday, September 19th. The New England Patriots travel to the new Meadowlands Stadium to play the New York Jets. I already talked about these two teams match-ups in my #14 game to watch..so I’m not going to beat a dead horse, but just know this…These two teams hate each other, the coaches hate each other, and the fans hate each other. There will be a lot of hitting and cheap shots in this game and a lot of blood left on the field. Should be one of the most entertaining games of the year.

#6. Week 1, Monday, September 13th. The Baltimore Ravens travel up to New York to face the Jets in a match-up between Jets head coach Rex Ryan and his old team the Baltimore Ravens. I find this game extremely compelling because this off season it has seemed like the Jets have picked up every big name free agent not named Julius Peppers and are beginning to look like the favorites to knock off the Colts in the AFC. So who better to test how good this team actually is, in week one, than the Jets head coach Rex Ryan’s former team the Baltimore Ravens.  Under Ryan’s defense in Baltimore the Ravens always had the leagues top defense. And when Ryan left, so did the Ravens dominating defense. Last year the Ravens defense was good, but not not great. They look to regain that swagger right out of the gate this year and they will look to make a statement against Ryan’s Jets, which will lead to a very entertaining game.

Brothers Eli and Peyton Manning

#5. Week 2, Sunday, September 19th. It’s a battle of the Mannings when Eli’s New York Giants head to Indianapolis to face off against older brother Peyton’s Colts. Peyton has gotten the better of his younger brother over the years, but it always leads for a entertaining game and a huge amount of press. The Manning brothers are both elite quarterbacks and will look to spread the field with their passing games. It will provide for a entertaining game that will be a shootout. As usual I expect Peyton and his Colts to beat Eli and his Giants, but it will be an entertaining game. A fun side note is that both the brothers are the two highest paid players in the NFL.

#4. Week 11, Sunday, November 21st. The Indianapolis Colts travel to Foxboro to play the New England Patriots. It’s Colts vs. Patriots need I say more? The top two quarterbacks in the league (Tom Brady & Peyton Manning) face off against each other and over the years it is the most entertaining game of the season and especially in the playoffs. These two teams hate each other. These are the best two teams of the decade and when they face off it’s always a hard hitting, high scoring game that is usually won on the last possession. Last years game was one of the most memorable games ever (thanks Bill Belichick for going for it on 4th and 2). If we’re lucky this game will be just as exciting as last year.

#3. Week 7, Sunday, October 24th. The Minnesota Vikings and Brett Favre travel to Green Bay to play the Packers. Any time you have a legend playing against his former team in his former home stadium where he started for 16 years and won a Super Bowl it’s going to be exciting and dramatic. But throw in that it is a divisional game just adds that much more excitement. On top of that Brett Favre is going to want to make the Packers front office look like idiots for letting him go and Aaron Rogers is going to want to show that the Packers made the right decision in keeping him.The Lambeau crowd will forever love Brett Favre and seeing him in purple and gold always breaks their hearts. It’s going to be a great game you can’t miss this one.

#2. Week 4, Sunday, October 3rd. The Philadelphia Eagles host NFC East rival the Washington Redskins. Any other year I wouldn’t have this game even in my top 18 or even in my top 46, but this year is different and that’s for one reason only…Long time Eagles great Donovan McNabb was traded to the Redskins this off season. The Philly fans are the harshest fans in the NFL and his return will be filled with so many chants of “BOOHHH” I can’t even imagine. This is also a divisional game so it has a lot of weight riding on it. Also Donovan McNabb will be trying to prove to his team that he is still a franchise quarterback. McNabb felt disrespected when the Eagles said “they were trying to get young” and shipped him off to Washington D.C. when he’s only 33 years old. McNabb will be looking to prove them wrong and make a statement. This game will be very exciting and it will be interesting to see how those evil Eagles fans treat McNabb. Nonetheless it’s going to be a great game.

#1. Week 1, Thursday, September 9th. The Minnesota Vikings head down to New Orleans to play the Saints in a rematch of last years NFC Championship game. It’s weird that the number one “can’t miss” game of the year is also the first game of the year, but there is no way this game isn’t the most exciting game of the season. The only way this game wouldn’t be the most exciting is if the Saints played the Colts, but since that’s not happening this game is easily number one. Last years NFC Championship game

New Orleans Saints Running Back Reggie Bush

last year was the most exciting football game all year, other then the Super Bowl which will be hard to ever top, because you had the legend Brett Favre leading his new team into New Orleans to play the the number one seeded Saints. It was a match-up of the NFC’s top two teams and it didn’t disappoint. This game was full of hard hits (Brett Favre was forced to think of retiring because of all the hits he took in this game) and exciting plays. The game was won in overtime by the Saints after Brett Favre threw an interception that sent the game into overtime. In overtime the Saints kicked a field goal on the first possession of overtime (this wouldn’t happen now since the NFL changed the OT rule). After this game the Saints went on to win the Super Bowl and forever change the city of New Orleans forever. This game is going to be incredible. The two best teams in the NFC (maybe the NFL), the craziest fans in the NFL (love the Saints fans), and two of the best quarterbacks in the NFL (Drew Brees and Brett Favre). I don’t know how this game could get any better. It will truly be the most exciting game of the year.

So there it is everyone, my top 18 games that you can’t miss this upcoming NFL season. So gear up and to quote my least favorite player in NFL history (Terrell Owens) “Get your popcorn ready”.
